Description

Salt content is one of the most important water parameters in saltwater aquariums. It is essential to check it regularly because many aquarium inhabitants do not react well to even minor changes in the water conditions and can get unduly stressed when the water parameters change.

This precision hydrometer by Tropic Marin made of mouth-blown glass is a measuring device for accurately determining the salt density or salinity in saltwater aquariums.

Important hydrometer values:

  • Maximum deviation: 0.001 (25 °C)
  • Measuring range: 1.018 to 1.028
  • Resolution: 0.0001
  • Recommended range: 1.022 and 1.024 kg/l

Tip: Tropic Marin hydrometer is available both individually and in a set together with the Tropic Marin measuring cylinder.

Note: With an average salinity of 35 ‰ at 25 °C, natural seawater has a salt density of approx. 1.023 kg/L. In a saltwater aquarium, a value between 1.022 and 1.024 kg/L is recommended.

Instructions for use:

  1. Fill the measuring cylinder with max. 400 ml saltwater at a water temperature of 25 °C.
  2. Make sure the hydrometer is dry and clean.
  3. Submerge the hydrometer in the water until it floats freely.
  4. Read the salt content on the green scale of the hydrometer at the lower meniscus of the water surface.
  5. Rinse the cylinder thoroughly after use with tap or reverse osmosis water to remove any salt residue and prevent distorting subsequent readings.

Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:

Did you know that the hydrometer is a widely used measuring instrument in many fields? It is used in wine cellars, dairies and in the chemical industry to determine and measure various values, contents and concentrations.
