Description

What is potassium and what are the symptoms of potassium deficiency?

For aquatic plants in a planted aquarium to be healthy and display balanced growth, the plants need around 20 macronutrients - including nitrate and phosphate, light, CO₂ and potassium. Potassium is a macronutrient that is usually found in high concentrations in the plant and performs important tasks:

  • Builds root and cell pressure
  • Required in metabolic processes such as the synthesis of sugars, starch, cellulose and lignin

Plants get potassium in various ways. While some of it comes from tap water, a small amount gets into the aquarium water through food and fish excrement. The plants store the nutrient in their cells and can also transport it within the plant if necessary.

In densely planted aquariums with many fast-growing species, normal fertilisation is usually not sufficient because they have a significantly higher macronutrient requirement. This can lead to various deficiency symptoms. A potassium deficiency is initially noticeable in older leaves because when the demand is higher, potassium from older leaves is transferred to younger leaves via the plant's vascular system. Signs of a potassium deficiency are:

  • yellow dots or patches between leaf veins or on the edge of the leaf (chlorosis)
  • dot-shaped or extensive tissue death (necrosis)
  • stunting of newly formed leaves
  • small black dots

Eliminate potassium deficiency with Plant Care K

Aquariums can have different levels due to varying factors such as the number of plants and species, the level and type of fish stock, feed, water changes and growing conditions. Potassium consumption must therefore be determined for each aquarium individually and regularly.

Dennerle's Plant Care K can used when the tap water is too soft, as soft water has a low potassium content. With Plant Care K you can add the precise amount of potassium needed by the aquatic plants in your aquarium.

Recommended use:

First, determine over several weeks what amount of potassium is necessary for your aquarium by fertilising with Plant Care K. This will determine the weekly dose.

You can then add this weekly dose of Plant Care K and gradually increase the measuring intervals to 2 to 4 weeks.

Always use Plant Care K in combination with a micronutrient fertiliser (iron fertiliser)! Dennerle Plant Care Pro provides a complete supply of nutrients.

Dennerle also recommends performing partial water changes of 25% to 50% every week to eliminate waste and inhibitors and avoid any nutrient imbalances.

Dosage recommendation:

2 ml Plant Care K per 100 L of aquarium water adds 1 ml/L potassium. For comparison: the optimal potassium concentration is 10-20 mg/L.

Plant Care K is suitable for both daily and weekly fertilisation.
