Description
The JBL SilikatEx Rapid is a granulated filter medium for use in external filters of fresh and saltwater aquariums and serves to remove silica (silicates) which leads to the formation of diatoms.
Clean and healthy water
Plant, feed residues and metabolic products deteriorate the quality of the aquarium water. Good water quality is necessary to promote the health of fish and plants in the aquarium. This can be achieved with aquarium filters. The filters suck in the aquarium water and pull the dirt and waste materials out of the water. Filters also provide an ideal habitat for bacteria and can be fitted with various filter materials to achieve a specific purpose.
Nice aquariums without annoying algae
Diatoms form brownish deposits on plants, soil and decorations. They form when the water contains more than 0.4 mg / l silica (silicates - SiO2). The silica is mostly introduced via tap water. The silica serves the diatoms to build up a skeleton. To combat this, the silica is simply removed from the water and the algae die or cannot form at all.
Diatoms are neither toxic nor harmful. In Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyika in Africa, they even form part of the food base for cichlids that feed on youngsters. Since the algae form brownish deposits, which we consider unattractive, we would like to remove them from the aquarium.
Difference diatoms / lubricating algae
Both groups of algae can look very similar. However, if you hold them between your fingers, you can feel the difference: lubricating algae feel greasy and slimy even when rubbed for a long time, whereas diatoms still feel rough.
Special filtering
SilikatEx Rapid removes silicate from fresh and saltwater aquariums. This removes unwanted diatoms (brown or red deposits) that often occur after adding freshwater. Diatoms can also occur when using osmosis systems without a special silicate remover membrane. Among other things, SilikatEx Rapid also removes phosphates and thereby controls the growth of other algae. The filter material creates biotope-friendly living conditions.
Simple application
JBL SilikatEx Rapid is transferred to the universal filter bag and embedded in the filter and is then ready for immediate use. The silicate content can be checked with the JBL Silicate Test SiO2: values below 0.4 mg / l prevent the formation of diatoms. Guaranteed effectiveness: JBL SilikatEx Rapid binds up to 30,000 mg of silicate (SiO2) / kg.

SiliacatEx
Rated with 5 out of 5 stars.
After setting up new 140L aquarium I had issues with diatoms. Silicate test was over 6 mg/l. With water changes I could temporary drop the result to 4 mg/l. Then I put about half of the SilicatEx ''sand'' in the included bag and put in the filter after mechanical filtration. The test result dropped and stabilised to 0,4 mg/l until now (about 4 weeks since application). Diatoms are no longer an issue.
