Description

A welcome addition to any aquarium: Micranthemum umbrosum impresses as ground-hugging bush with rounded leaves, nearly fuzzy branches and bright green colour. In North America, Central and South America, the adaptable plant thrives under and above water. Under water it grows slightly horizontally and upwards to form a low bush - the foreground and midground are therefore its preferred territory. In very good lighting conditions with regular addition of CO2 and nutrients, it will reward you with dense growth and healthy, vibrant colour.

Playful, graceful and yet compact makes this stem plant justifiably popular among aquascaping enthusiasts. Optimal conditions for lush thriving growth are very good to intense light, a water temperature between 4 and 24 °C and soft to medium water hardness. It can grow from 3 to 15 cm in height. Regular pruning is a must and enables it to be planted even in nano aquariums. By replanting shoots, the density remains attractive and retains its wispy character. This emersed-growing species can be propagated via cuttings as well as division. To make cuttings, simply place stems flat on the bottom of a wet substrate and new plants quickly form from them.

Note: The plants are grown in-vitro in sterile conditions in a laboratory. They are therefore also suitable for sensitive animals such as dwarf shrimps and can be used immediately. In-vitro plants do not harbour pests such as snails or parasites. No pesticides are used.

Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:
Micranthemum umbrosum is a good option for emersed habitats such as paludariums and wabi-kusa because it forms a flat, creeping carpet.
